Biography: Antoine Dumas was born in Quebec City in 1932.
Career: He graduated from Laval Univ. in 1958 with a B.A. in Fine Arts. For a while he works as graphic designer. In 1962, he becomes a full-time teacher at Laval Univ. School of Fine Arts and the year after, is appointed director of the graphic & visual communication program. Starting in 1960, he held regular exhibitions in Qubec, namely at the Zanettin Gallery. In 1973, his works could be seen at Gilles Corbeil Gallery, in Montreal; in september of the same year, a ten years retrospective of his paintings was held at the Quebec Museum, in Quebec City, at la Maison des Arts de la Sauvegarde, in Montreal, and at the Rimouski Regional Museum. In 1975, his recent works of the time were in exhibition at the Canadian Consulate General in New-York and in 1976 at the Sminaire de Qubec together with l'Art Franais Gallery in Montral.In the meantime, he had been part of many group exhibitions, in Canada, in the U.S. and in many european countries. In 1963, he designed the decor of TOSCA, the opera presented by the Thtre Lyrique of Nouvelle-France. Antoine Dumas has also painted murals at Montreal Dorval Airport and on the walls of the Sun Life building in Montreal; he illustrated numerous books, cards, official stamps and published some very fine silkscreens over the last 30 years.In 1989, he was granted an official retrospective of his work at the Villa Bagatelle in Quebec. Antoine Dumas is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy. |
